Chris Mullin, former Environment Minister Chris Mullin who had opened the Centre in 2000, is tucking his trousers in preparation for his adventurous ride to the Centre on a seven-seater Circle Cycle kindly provided by Get Cycling.

The seven cyclists arrived safely and in time to join in the celebrations. Everyone loved the bike and wanted to have a go but there was no time so we at least got a group picture.

Local poet Anneliese Emmans Dean led a haiku workshop which resulted in 59 original haikus written by the day's visitors.

Our pedal power generator (built by Robin who's smiling proudly at the back) was great at keeping children entertained. It can power a range of low voltage appliances from a small kettle to a fan - good for cooling down the cyclist!

Heworth Cubs were joined by some of the day's visitors to perform the edutaining Compost! the mini-musical written by Anneliese Emmans Dean.

One of the expert presenters was Nick Parsons from South Yorkshire Energy Centre. His passion and enthusiasm for eco-refurbishment techniques inspire everyone to go and make home improvements, which benefit them as well as the planet.
